Pyrite-Chalcopyrite-Gold(?) in Magnetite Ore-Cornwall PA (SOLD)
Product Description:
(SOLD) Pyrite, chalcopyrite, and perhaps small traces of gold can be found throughout this entire specimen, not just coating it! Specimen measures 5" x 4" x 4" about 1.25" thick.
This piece was collected at the now defunct Cornwall Iron Mine, in Lebanon County. It was the oldest operating iron mine in the country until 1972 when Hurricane Agnes flooded it.
When the mine was running, gold was actually found mixed in with the pyrite and chalcopyrite. Bethlehem Steel Company melted these two minerals to extract the gold and sold it to companies in Ontario, Canada. The money from the gold paid for all of their operational expenses to remove the iron - meaning pure profit. This neat specimen piece will stick pretty hard to a magnet.
