Small or flat particles of gold can be often be held in suspension and float on the surface of the water. Oils present in your panning material can create a surface tension on the water surface which will suspend these gold particles. If your gold floats it will not be captured and will be lost.

Adding some "gold drops solution" to your paydirt while panning or using a concentrator can greatly aid is dropping the gold out of suspension and make recovery of the finest gold particles more easy.

Also works well with recirculating sluices.
